With a constant connection to multiple screens, families are often spending more time interacting with online friends and communities and less time enjoying their friends and family “IRL” (that’s social networking short-hand for “in real life”). According to Yahoo’s recent study, “Brave New Moms: Navigating technology’s impact on family time,” moms report living a “hectic” life with technology only accelerating those feelings.
The Yahoo! study also found that 71% of families engage with technology together daily – from playing video games together to using the internet to connecting with family that do not live nearby, for example. Conversely, more than half (52%) of moms surveyed said technology is a detractor from time otherwise well spent as a family.
The Yahoo! study moms categorized family time in four consistent ways: routines, rituals, traditions and relive. One family ritual that is particularly important to me is eating dinner together. Now that my boys are getting a little older (2½ years-old and 3½ years-old) we are committed to having at least three dinners a week as a family. My boys are very picky eaters so once a week we rely on one particular, kid-favorite brand of mac and cheese so we can be sure that we enjoy this time together instead of struggling over getting my kids to eat.
As we start a new year of family traditions, there’s an opportunity for a broad array of brands to help moms enjoy the limited time she has with family – shifting focus from efficiency to making memories they’ll cherish for a lifetime.
